How to Make an Envelope Dog Bed Cover

A comfy dog bed is a must-have for any furry friend. But sometimes, those beds can get a little dirty or worn out. A quick and easy fix is to make a new cover! Here's how to create a simple envelope-style dog bed cover using fabric scraps or leftover material.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that is durable and easy to wash, like cotton, linen, or canvas. You'll need enough to cover the top and sides of your dog bed, plus a bit extra for seams.
  • Thread: Choose a thread color that matches your fabric.
  • Sewing machine: If you're comfortable hand-sewing, you can skip this.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair of scissors makes cutting fabric easier.
  • Measuring tape: You'll need this to measure your dog bed.
  • Pins: For holding fabric together before sewing.
  • Iron (optional): To press seams for a neater finish.

  1. Measure Your Dog Bed: Carefully measure the length, width, and height of your dog bed. Add 2-3 inches to each measurement to allow for seam allowances.
  2. Cut the Fabric: Cut two rectangles of fabric. The first rectangle will be the length and width of your dog bed, plus the extra seam allowances. This will be the top panel. The second rectangle will be the height of your dog bed, plus seam allowances, and the length of the dog bed, plus the extra seam allowances. This will be the side panel.
  3. Sew the Side Panel: Fold the side panel in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing each other. Pin along the raw edge. Sew along the pinned edge using a straight stitch. Press the seam open.
  4. Attach the Side Panel to the Top Panel: Lay the top panel right side up. Place the side panel along one of the short edges of the top panel, right sides facing each other. Pin in place. Sew along the pinned edge. Repeat for the other side panel.
  5. Finish the Edges: Fold the raw edges of the top panel down by 1/2 inch, then fold them down again by 1/2 inch. Pin in place. Sew around all four edges of the top panel to create a finished edge.
  6. Create the Envelope Flap: Fold the top panel over the side panels to create a flap. Pin the flap in place, making sure it overlaps the side panels by at least 2 inches.
  7. Sew the Flap: Sew along the edge of the flap to secure it to the side panels.
  8. Add Buttons (Optional): If you want to add buttons for a more secure closure, mark the desired locations on the flap. Sew buttons to the flap and buttonholes to the side panel.

  • To prevent fraying, use a serger or zigzag stitch along the raw edges of your fabric.
  • Consider adding a decorative trim or ribbon to the edge of the flap for a more finished look.
  • If your dog bed has a removable cover, you can use this same technique to create a new cover. Simply follow the measurements of the old cover.

Now you have a fresh, clean cover for your dog's bed! Enjoy!
