How to Make a Waterproof Dog Bed Cover: A DIY Guide

Is your dog's bed constantly getting soaked from accidents, drool, or muddy paws? A waterproof dog bed cover is the perfect solution! Not only will it protect your dog's bed from damage, but it will also make it easier to clean and keep your furry friend comfortable.

This guide will teach you how to make a waterproof dog bed cover yourself, saving you money and ensuring a perfect fit for your dog's bed.

Materials You'll Need

  • Waterproof fabric: This could be a variety of materials like vinyl-coated fabric, nylon, or even a shower curtain liner. Choose something durable and easy to wipe clean.
  • Fabric for the outer layer: Choose a fabric that complements your dog's bed and is comfortable to the touch. Cotton, fleece, or even faux fur are good options.
  • Sewing machine and supplies: This includes thread, needles, pins, scissors, and a measuring tape.
  • Elastic or drawstring: For a snug fit and easy removal.
  • Optional: Non-slip backing: This will prevent the cover from sliding around on the bed.

1. Measure Your Dog Bed * Measure the length, width, and height of your dog's bed. * Add a few inches to each measurement for seam allowance and a comfortable fit.

2. Cut Your Fabric * Cut two pieces of waterproof fabric to the dimensions you measured for the top and bottom of the cover. * Cut two pieces of outer fabric to the same dimensions.

3. Sew the Waterproof Layers * Pin the two waterproof fabric pieces together, right sides facing. * Sew around the entire perimeter, leaving a small opening on one side for turning. * Turn the fabric right side out through the opening and press the seams flat. * Close the opening by hand sewing or using a machine.

4. Sew the Outer Layers * Repeat the process from step 3 with the outer fabric pieces.

5. Combine Layers * Place the waterproof layer inside the outer layer, right sides facing each other. * Pin the two layers together around the perimeter. * Sew around the entire perimeter, leaving an opening for the elastic or drawstring.

6. Attach Elastic or Drawstring * If using elastic, sew a piece of elastic to each corner of the opening. Make sure the elastic is long enough to fit snugly around the bed. * If using a drawstring, sew a casing around the opening and thread the drawstring through.

7. Optional: Add Non-Slip Backing * If you want a non-slip backing, simply cut a piece of non-slip fabric to the same size as the cover and attach it to the bottom layer.

8. Finish * Turn the cover right side out and press the seams.

Your waterproof dog bed cover is complete! You can now easily slip the cover onto your dog's bed and enjoy a clean and comfortable sleeping space for your furry friend.

  • For extra durability, you can add a layer of batting between the waterproof and outer fabric.
  • Use a thicker thread for a more secure seam.
  • If you have a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch, use it for a more professional finish.

With a little effort and creativity, you can create a custom-fit waterproof dog bed cover that will protect your dog's bed and provide a comfortable place for them to rest.
